My guess for the most cost-effective means of protecting power grids is to use the earliest reliable detection of dangerous magnetic events to shut down grids and isolate vulnerable transformers and equipment in temporary, controlled, protective outages. @antigen4 I agree with you that magnetic storms don’t cause extinction. The Earthian atmosphere provides sufficient protection from solar storms. I don’t believe that caused Mars to lose so much of its once dense atmosphere. If that were the case, then Venus should have an atmosphere just as thin or thinner than Mars since it also has no magnetic field, but Venus still has an atmosphere 90 times as dense as Earth’s. I believe it’s due to Mars’s volcanic activity shutting down.
